Overview

The Bomber Fat Free BD5 Shad is one of the most value packed crankbaits on the market today. By design, these crankbaits are one of the most efficient baits made. That means that while the profile of the lure is big and bulky, the cross-section is narrower which allows the big bill to get them down quick and deep with minimal effort.

This design also creates a wide but fast wobble that you can feel all the way to your elbow when you retrieve the lure. The wobble causes the built-in rattles to create an underwater sound wave that will really piss-off big bass. All these crankbaits have a beautiful, light reflective finish that will attract a lot of attention and generate more bites.

When the Fat Free Shad gets bit, you can be confident that the hooks will bite and hold since all these baits come equipped with the exclusive Excalibur Rotating Treble Hook. These are mean hooks. They are super-sharp right out of the box and have a rotating design that bites deep so you will lose fewer fish and boat more limits. Available in multiple colors, the Bomber Fat Free Shad BD5 Crankbait is a must-have for every deep cranking arsenal.

Comments: In my opinion this is the greatest deep diving crankbait of all time......I've tried to replace this bait with many sexy new baits over the years but I just keep coming back to it, there's just something about the wobble that a bass can't stand.....basically every model from the discontinued fry to the full size extra deep model will catch fish no matter the time of year..........and at around 7 bucks apiece you can't go wrong

Comments: Attention FRANK SCALISH: More custom colors in these please. All kinds... One of the best bass snatchers ever. What lure did I catch my first smallmouth on as a teenager? I think it's obvious. I have Megabass, Duo, Jackall, Spro, Rapala and more. I am always looking for ways to toss this bait. Idk if it's the profile, action, sound, idk what it is but it slays. This bait used to come in so many colorways and silent. Now it seems to be just another crank among the mix that is past it's glory days like most lurenet stuff but still just as good now as back then. If it's not in the mix you need to get on it. Sleeper old school crank.

Comments: Along with other reviewers, I have relied on the Fat Free Shad for many, many years; probably have 200 of them in all the sizes and colors, rattling and silent, many no longer available. Big fan of BD6's and BD7's. While they are my go-to bass crank, I can't begin to tell you how many GIANT walleyes we've caught on Lake Erie in the summertime late at night casting these baits over the reefs. I've seen nights when I was passing out FF Shads like they were cocaine to newbies who were throwing other unproductive baits! Nothing against any other cranks, but these have always been the real deal!

Comments: Easily up there in quality and fish catching power as DT Rapala crank baits. Those are some big shoes to fill, and they do the job and then some. Caught more bass on these than any other crank at any price. I use the 3/4 oz BD7 the most. Caught my PB smallmouth in January night fishing here in Arizona while the lure sat on the surface waiting to be reeled in.. heard a splash near where I cast it and set the hook even though I couldn't see the lure - boom.. these are the real deal, period.

Comments: I have been fishing the Fat Free Shads for close to 30 years. I own them in sizes from the BD4 to a few of the BD8's.  Mostly though I fish the BD6's that get down 8 to 12 ft. Over the years I probably have caught well over a thousand bass on these lures. I have my favorites which include the Pearl White, Citrus Shad and a color that I can't divulge because it hasn't been made since Bomber bought Excalibure Lures. When I find that color lure on Ebay I do my best to buy or win the bid on it.  The smaller lures in that color isn't hard to get but that one in the BD6 size is really getting hard to find so normally when you find it you better be prepared to give a premium price/bid on it. I have a friend in Canada that also tries to find this colored lure and so we compete trying to get them.  But, I digress, these lures have something that other crankbaits just don't have. I'm not sure if it is because of the vibration or the sound of these lures but the fish just can't seem to keep from jumping all over them. I have tried and fished many other brands but I always go back to the FF Shads. If you want a crankbait that performs buy one of these in your favorite color and hold on.

Comments: I have been fishing the bomber series crankbaits for years now! I honestly cant not find a better replacement. I have caught more fish with this crankbait than any other bait I have used. The best tip I can give you is match the hatch to your local bait fish that is where I have the best luck.

Comments: Great Crankbait, just make sure you change the hooks.

From: JP: LA

Comments: An awesome deep diving crankbait. Put some Owner trebles on these and you'll never even have to set the hook! I like the Rootbeer Float, and Pearl White colors.

From: Jacob: Apache Junction, AZ

Comments: Homer color is an amazing bait differently gets hammered off some deep points. It'd be even better if they made it in 1/2oz so it could be used in every depth.

From: Michael: GA

Comments: An outstanding deep diver for June and July on Jordan and Falls Lakes, NC.  I use 12 pound flourocarbon line.  I have been catching big bass with these baits for 15 years.  Homer is the number one color.

Comments: caught a 19' smallie today on it!!!

From: Paul: WI

Comments: Simply the best crankbait on the market. the BD7 will hit in 19ft of water all day with 10 lb pline mono, and it will do this straight out of the package, unlike many other crankbaits on the market. when it comes to tournament fishing time is money and i don't want to waste it tuning a crankbait, that's why fat free shad is the only crankbait i throw. strike king, lucky craft, and rapala don't come close to Fat free shad's dependability and quality.

From: Alex: Martin, TN

Comments: This is hands down the best crankbait on the market have caught fish from 6 inches all the way up to 6 1/2 pounds. I personally have caught multple 20 pound days on this crank bait love it. Orderd 15 at one time. These crankbaits are AMAZING.

From: David: Spokane, WA

Comments: The Fry-sized model will catch almost any species of bass, especially when the bite is light.  I've caught walleye, spots, and smlmth/lrgmth using 6-8 lb test w/ the fry-size year round on most lakes in KY.

From: John: Lexington, KY

Comments: Fat Free Shad Bd7 is great for northen pike. I use this bait a lot and it never let me down!

From: Magnus: Mullsj, Sweden

Comments: Tenn. Shad has been a monster during the fall shad run. Hold up great too, caught a couple of large redfish on them and the hooks suprisingly held up. At one point found em schoolin and caught 10 bass on 12 casts

From: Sam: Crestview, FL

Comments: Every crankbait I've ever throw up to this one we're Strike Kings and a few Lucky Craft. Strike Kings are good lures, don't get me wrong, but this is the only one that hasn't needed tuning out of the box, the hooks dont need replacing, and the paint is good. I didn't like the hooks on the Lucky Craft, I lost 2 or 3 bass when they jumped, only small but still I care. Where I fish crankbaits, standing dead brush in a pond, you loose a lure every now and again, but loosing this one doesn't hurt as bad as loosing my buddies Lucky Craft!

Comments: Love these crankbaits.i have caught two fish at a time on the citrus shad and the pearl white whith a red sharpied back

Comments: love this in the crawfish, caught 2 nice keepers in recent tournament when nothing else worked... also caught an 18lb flat head catfish!!! lol!!  thought i had the "mother of all bass" :)

From: Jon: Indiana

Comments: If you make a trip to Mexico or even Falcon Lake I'd suggest you take a couple of the big ones in Citrus shad. This bait and color is a consistent producer on Lake El Salto and when a crankbait bite is hot - well watch out. My friend and I caught over 100 fish in one afternoon with this bait, anchored by an 11 pound hawg. And two fish simulataneously on one lure twice!

One suggestion - upgrade to heavier split rings and treble hooks. The hardware it comes with is good, the hooks are super sharp. But they will not hold up to a furious bite like you can have on one of the hot lakes down south. I'd suggest the #5 Owner hyperwire rings and Owner double strength trebles in size 2 or even a size larger.

From: Scott: New Mexico, USA

Comments:  Quality lure.  Lip and paint hold up well to abuse.  Definitely my 'confidence' bait.  Did I mention it catches them too?

From: Aaron: Dover, TN

Comments: Top notch bait for the money.  Components are solid and they hold up well.  The citrus shad can be deadly late March - May!
