Shallow running crankbaits will always be fish catchers. The Luhr Jensen Speed Trap 1/4oz Crankbaits are one of the most exciting baits you can throw when the crank bite is on. These baits also come in an incredible range of colors. Don't let the light weight fool you, the Speed Traps are full-sized crankbaits that will look like a meal to hungry bass lurking in shallow cover.
Use these cranks when you are fishing any shallow water; right on the bank, over flats, over submerged grass, or over brush and stumps. Unlike lipless crankbaits that are also effective in these situations, these baits float when you stop them. This enables you to use them in a stop-and-go retrieve and not have them drop into grass or sticks where they'll hang up.
As their name implies, you can crank these baits as fast as you want and they'll run straight and true every time. The Luhr Jensen Speed Trap 1/4oz Crankbaits have the colors, the noise, and the action to put fish in the boat when the shallow bite is on.
Upgrade Your Treble Hooks!
Comments: Good bait but the paint jobs have zero consistency. They continue to get worse and worse. Delta red, crystal crawdad, fire tiger and brown mud craw are nothing like the photos. There must be a crystal shortage also. If you find a color you like, stock up. The next lot may not be anywhere close.

Comments: I've got dozens of $20, much better made and equipped, Japanese crankbaits that this truly awful crankbait out-fishes in the spring and fall by a wide margin. This ghastly lure comes with terrible hooks and rings, and the molding is pretty bad. It's simply a fish catching machine, though. Whoever designed it really knew what they were doing. It's akin to an Alfa Romeo in being wonderfully designed and terribly made. Certainly, you want to put better hooks and split rings on it.

Comments: Pure tidal water cranking gold right here. The smaller size is killer for throwing around baitfish in lakes, too. I wish there were more colors in the small size. But yeah, the bigger one does serious work in tidal waters. From: Sid: Compton 4/1/20
Comments: I like this lure better than the !.5 type square bills. It gets a bit deeper and has a tighter wobble. For me, better than 1.5 sq. in cold water as in winter and early spring. I fish a lot of tournaments and this lure has put some change in my pocket, Just love them

Comments: These are truly great crankbaits. The 1/8 oz is the only one I use and have caught some really big bass (spots & largies) on these little guys. First order of business is changing out the hooks (owner makes some #5s that are awesome on these) and then you're good to go...see if you can go to a local tackle shop and buy the older models if they have them...Luhr Jensen changed the rattles in the newer ones. They still catch fish but the older ones are fantastic if you can find them

Comments: The best crankbait on the market. Unfortunately, I lost the only one I had while trying out a new knot. ALWAYS use one of the crawdad colors!
From: Cole: USA 9/14/16
Comments: The Speedtrap is an awesome bait that flat out catches fish. Change to better quality hooks & expect the back hook to stay sharper. You will change the front hook three or four times more often than the back hook. It's a delicate bait & will break if slapped to hard on the waters surface to remove weeds.
From: Monte: USA 5/23/16
Comments: The Speed Trap is one of those baits that just seems to have that frequency down to a science especially in stained water. It will catch fish when nothing else seems to work. The frequency will call them in when they can't even see it. Upgrade the hooks. Stepping up rear hook by one size is a MUST.
From: J: Sandy, OR 12/13/15
Comments: The Speed Trap has a very unique frequency wobble as it comes through the water & it just flat-out catches fish in most conditions. If you are targeting big fish, or if you are fishing in heavy cover, plan to change the hooks before you use them. I go bigger/stronger & it doesn't appear to affect the performance at all even at slower retrieve speeds when fish are lethargic.

Comments: I was given one of these baits about 15yrs ago.One of the best cranks I have ever fished.I have caught many different species with these. Smallmouth, largemouth, walleye, muskie, pike, crappie, and catfish. Can't go wrong with this luhr. No bait is a cure all,but I would put my money on this one.over the years I have fished this luhr in quite a few rivers an lakes on the east coast.an kicked butt.I prefer the old colors bluegill perch has always been my go to in a clutch. AWESOME!
From: Frank: PA 5/27/15
Comments: When casting these baits a lot I have found that on an errant cast these baits are fragile.. Buy a bunch because they will break in half and the bills also seem to break easy.. I'd rather spend a few extra bucks for a bait that will hold up to some abuse..I've bpught 6 in the last 2 months and 4 are broken..

Comments: Amazing and impressive lure for peacock bass in Venezuela. It was recommended by Dave, a fisherman from Oregon, who was fishing at Laguna Larga Lodge, some three years ago. I use the 1/4 Oz size, but split rings and treble hooks should be replaced ( I use Mustad or Eagle Claw salt water stuff) before attempting to fish for peacock bass.
From: Bernardo: Cinaruco River, Apure Venezuela 1/11/15
Comments: I have recently discovered the Speed Trap. While the split rings and hooks are a little light for my particular use, the Firetiger Speed Trap is deadly on Coho Salmon in the coastal streams and lakes here in Oregon. Right now it is out catching everything else in my arsenal, including Herring in tidewater. Fun stuff!!
From: Jim: Eugene, OR 10/13/14
Comments: the speed trap has always been one of my most successful crankbaits in the spring and fall. The company needs to go back to the old color schemes of lemonade, chartreuse/brown craw, and summer mud craw. There doesn't seem to be any design changes, but I don't catch as many fish as I use to on the new color schemes. I am not giving a bad report, but some things weren't meant to be changed.
From: Scott: WV 7/19/14
Comments: Been around forever, for good reason. They are FIRE. Bill is fragile, do not slap your bait on the water to clear it. Change those hooks.

Comments: My 10 year old daughter bought me a Speed Trap for my birthday last year. I really don't fish crankbaits at all, but of course I had to keep it in my gear so she could see that I liked it, etc. Wasn't getting a largemouth bite on any of my go to baits, so I pulled out the Speed Trap for kicks. DOMINATED largemouth for the next hour - had a 25 pound stringer easy. A fat 6 pounder, a couple of 5's, several 4's and 3's. A couple of days later, I nailed a 19lb flathead catfish - unbelievable. Search on Youtube for 19lb flathead catfish Tempe, AZ. Ordered a bunch in different colors, and I've been killing it. Amazing bait.
From: John: Gilbert, AZ
Comments: Im a cranker and don't suffer fools when it comes bait choice. The speed trap is an awesome choice for fishing Largemouth in muddy water or algea blooms. In fact it is my favorite plastic squarebill for stained water. I either change the hooks or sharpen them out of the box, and I have been known to change the snap with a 6th sense split ring when fishing around millfoil or pond moss. There are a lot of bad colors so stick to sexy shad and dont look back. From: Nate
Comments: I love these crankabits. In the spring when high pressure fronts come in and your crankbait bite dies I have always had good luck with these baits. They are very subtle and have great action. However, every bait I have owned has split and took on water. I still throw them but I monitor the bait and check them. I have actually lost fish and brought the bait back and the hook ring was gone because the two bait sides were beginning to seperate. From: mwt: KY Lake
Comments: THE OG squarebill. Use the big one with wind and heavy cover, the lil guy will cover water for ya and finesse thru heavy cover.
From: Meatwad: Squarebillington
Comments: I use these all the time now...I used to never use crankbaits but now its all I use..within the first 10 casts I have a great size bass. I caught 3 six pounders 4 five and under bass and 1 nine pound bass with the lemonade color last week alone..I had a big one yesterday and my 8 pound line gave way and lost my speedtrap..I had other tackle but didn't even bother using it..this is the only brand I will go with now!

Comments: If you like fishing crankbaits you have to try a Speed Trap. They track true at high speed. Tackle Warehouse has the best color selection bar none !
