Overview

Exhibiting the horizontal struggle and slow-rise of a dying shad, the Rapala Shadow Rap Shad extends the bass-catching power of the Shadow Rap family even further with a look and an action that is all-its-own. Engineered with a tall frame and flat sides, the Rapala Shadow Rap Shad responds to each rod twitch with an erratic, forward-rolling lunge, just like the original. However, unlike its cousin, the Rapala Shadow Rap Shad slowly floats towards the surface when paused, perfectly imitating the last movements of an expiring shad.

Capitalizing on the universal appeal of shad, the Rapala Shadow Rap Shad employs a broad profile that produces even more attention-grabbing flash. Enhancing authenticity, the Rapala Shadow Rap Shad is offered in a range of translucent and frosted color ways that are accented with ultrarealistic 3-D eyes and textured scaling. Fitted with two sticky-sharp VMC thin wire treble hooks, the Rapala Shadow Rap Shad captures the subtleties of an dying shad with a combination of size and action that “rises” to the occasion.

Comments: The Shadow Rap Shad catches fish for sure... but, yes there is a but. I had issues with two of the baits having the weights come out of there holding cylinder. Not going to lie or make it sound like it was the baits fault though, I did hit the rocks and bank a few times. I'll be the first one to admit my casting isn't the most accurate. The bait it's self will catch a lot of bass and I will keep buying more.

Comments: Great jerkbait in shallow water. Instead of driving the jerkbait into the ground or the grass in three feet of water just let it pause a few seconds until it gets back to the surface then jerk again. Stays above submerged grass easily and just slays them

Comments: I am not impressed with workmanship. The copy I bought does not "slowly float", it pops up like a bobber, I had to break out suspend strips from the get go. After half a dozen outings front treble lost two hooks and the lip is covered with a network of small cracks, and that's just from regular pond vegetation, no rocks.

Comments: I break these out every spring for largemouth and they just flat catch em.  I don't fish for white bass but found myself accidentally tearing up a school of white bass on one of these last spring, they couldn't get enough.  I can only imagine any predatory species of fish would crush these.

Comments: Any predatory fish will eat this....ANY!!!

Comments: This bait acts like a hard fluke. This is good. Try one.

Comments:Theres a reason rapala has been around forever. They set a standard for a moderate price. The shadow rap shad is a good JB for warmer water or shallow water. They put off a good amount of flash and you can work these aggressively without blowouts. The shape of the body doesn't allow for super long casts especially in wind.IMO the stock vmc hooks aren't very good.I would highly recommend changing them out. This bait doesn't suspend so you dont have to worry about balance so much. The mustad triple grip hooks are cheap and work well if the fish are choking it as opposed to slapping at it.

Comments:These jerk baits catch fish, hands down.Really good price and really good availability. I've caught LMB, SMB, Pike, large Crappie, Catfish one time. These baits have amazing action and fish can't pass them up.

Comments:This is my 2nd review of the Shadow Rap, and my opinion is the same; these jerkbaits are great fish catchers! The combination of profile, weighting system, action, and color options has moved this jerkbait into the upper tier with Lucky Craft, Spro, Megabass, and Smithwick. Throwing jerkbaits is my favorite technique for Spring/Fall smallmouth. Unstable weather patterns during Spring/Fall fishing season usually suspends smallies, and these lures have a great wobble & twitch motion that keep producing. The slow fall of the 3-hook model also evokes strikes when fish are holding tight to laydowns. I used the Moss Back Shiner during Winter 2107, to hook 100+ lrgmth on a very clear local TN lake. Haymaker has produced well on overcast days, so I ordered Imposter for extra flash. Again, my only recommendation for these jerkbaits is to upgrade the stock trebles with a stronger hook. For the $, the Rapala Shadow Rap (+Shad model) is the best value on the Tackle WHSE site.

Comments:I tried out 3 different baits this weekend and even after putting extra split rings on both hook hangers the bait still is not a "slow floater" these things are flat out floating jerkbaits wish I wouldn't have bought 3

From: Mark:WARRENSBURG Mo3/26/18

Comments:Great jerkbait. Once the water warms past the 50 degree mark, I put away the original Shadow Rap and employ this bait, instead. It has a slow rise and a more aggressive forward motion than the original, which is key once the warms to the upper range of cold-water jerk-baiting. Obviously, it's no secret that the VMC hooks are poor, so change them to Gamakatsu or Owner lighter wire trebles because a heavier hook with sink the bait and change the action. The original and Shad version are the only two jerkbaits I use, nowadays. From ice-out to about 50 degrees, I use the original, and from then until late fall, I use the Shad version. I resume using the original once the water drops into the upper 40s and until ice-up. The Deep versions of both lures are great on clearer bodies of water when fish are deeper than 10 feet. Building a tackle setup that is balanced is key to presenting the lures correctly. A medium to medium-heavy power rod with a fast action tip is a must, with lengths from 6'6" to 7'0" working for all scenarios (a rod longer than 7' with work an angler to death and cause the rod to hit the water or boat quite often unless you're taller than 6'6"). Fluorocarbon line from 10lb to 14lb will cover your 90% of your presentations. In some rare cases, I'll use 15lb to 17lb mono when fishing over grass flats in order to keep the bait riding high above the cover. Any reel that is SMOOTH casting (if it isn't, long casts that are crucial are impossible) in the 6 to 7 gear ratio range will be more than adequate; as the reel isn't used to impart action to the lure, just reel the bait in quickly for the next cast. Important tips: use oval split rings to keep the line from catching-in the round style rings which is inevitable given the action imparted on the lure; when the water temp drops below 40 degrees, use the most supple fluorocarbon you can because stiffer fluoros will become brittle and a good fish will break lighter line; lastly, if issues arise with thebalance of the bait, experiment with suspend dots to get it right for the given conditions.

Comments:BEST FLOATING JERKBAIT EVER!!!! More of a Slow Rise than a true floater. This bait has a very slow rise to it, which separates it from other floating jerkbaits. The head on this bait will tilt upwards as well, simulating a dying fish (some baitfish die and fall down, some baitfish die and float up) Once the water temp gets over 65 degrees I throw this jerkbait exclusively, all the way into the summer and early fall. Once water temp dips back down to around 60 and less, I switch it up to the suspending model jerkbaits like a shadow rap, X Rap, or Smithwick Rogue....Did I mention that this bait slays the smallies.. Yes it dooooooeeesssss

From:Unknown - 12/14/17

Comments: Bought this model in "Haymaker" finish. Great action and cast well. Flat profile has great wobble and twitch. Catches fish, and half the price of Lucky Craft. I have other Shadow Rap models, but Shad model has the best action for working lay downs and shallow rocks. The Shadow Raps seem to have better action than the X-Rap series. I suggest upgrading the trebles to Gamakatsu or comparable brand. Excellent product and affordable price. At less than $10, I highly recommend this jerk bait!

Comments:Was fishing Chatauqua Lake for bass and musky with the perch color. Caught a few bass but no musky, but then a biiiiig ol' spotted gar picked this up. Sharp hooks kept him there, had never seen a gar, much less this size, in the lake before. Great bait!

From: Zach: Buffalo, NY 2/14/17

Comments:I purchased the Moss back shiner and have been catching bass consistently on sunny days. It's a nice rip bait with good components and it seems durable. I used it one day fishing the Chattahoochee, hitting rocks for a few hours, and only damage were some scratches and a few chips nothing cracked. I got hung up a few times and the hooks haven't bent or broken. Overall, good lure.

From: Mike: Georgia 2/5/17

Comments:I don't know how I figured it out but you can catch the mess out of fry guarders burning it like a crankbait around nests. I guess you could catch them with a bare hook this time of year but it still works. I think I was using Elite Blue at the time and they were crushing it. The first one was a 3 plus male guarding a double digit plus female still on the nest, he hit it so hard I thought it was her for a second. Either way if you're looking for some confidence and a quick limit this is definitely a tool to use at the right time and I'm sure it catches 'em with a traditional cadence as well, especially in the winter.

From: Slater: Dallas, TX 6/19/16

Comments:I have had a couple of the Deeper diving ones & LOVE them. in my experience with these, they only dive about 2 maybe 3 feet. the action is good, but you have to work them fast to keep them down. They are "slow floating" and will pop to the surface rather quickly on a pause. Would be good if fishing above submerged grass, otherwise i like the deep diving version

4/25/16

Comments:Picked up one of these for cold water spring fishing. No bass quite yet, but the pike have been crushing this thing. Cranking it down and then letting it slowing rise with twitches in between drive the pike mad! Definitely worth the money and keeps up the legendary Rapala name.

4/15/16

Comments:Fished this for the first time today in the Albino Shiner color, no bites but the action was great! won't buy more just yet until I can see how it fares against the original shadow rap.

From: Tyler: PA 3/20/16

Comments:These things are the truth. I'll have one in the bag year round. I've had it a week and have caught the following in big numbers; largemouth, smallmouth, spots, striper, chubs, brim, crappie, and even an eel. Molten copper is my favorite.

From: Dustin: USA 3/15/16

Comments:My experience so far is that this bait gets crushed! Bass, Crappie & Pickerel... they all crush kit. I put a weighted circle sticker to keep it down in the colder water, but took it off today since water has warmed quite a bit this week. I'm impressed so far.
