Overview

Lew’s lightest reel, the Team Lew’s Hyper Mag Speed Spool SLP Casting Reels employ advanced materials and high-end technologies to provide a smooth, barely-noticeable feel. Encased in a strong, one-piece Magnesium frame, the Team Lew’s Hyper Mag Speed Spool SLP Casting Reels are equipped with C45 carbon side plates and an aircraft-grad duralumin spool that further reduces the overall weight.

A cut above in-terms of performance, the Team Lew’s Hyper Mag Speed Spool SLP Casting Reels are powered by a premium 11-bearing system with double-shielded stainless steel ball bearings and a Zero-e one-way clutch bearing for smooth rotation with minimal engagement. When it’s time to switch baits, the Team Lew’s Hyper Mag Speed Spool SLP Casting Reels are fitted with an externally adjustable 4-pin, 27-position SpeedCast Adjustable Centrifugal Braking (ACB) Braking system that allows for quick, finite changes.

No slacker in the power department, the Team Lew’s Hyper Mage Speed Spool SLP Casting Reel is fitted with a 95mm carbon fiber handle with custom Winn Dri-Tac knobs that provide increased control. When it’s time to really crank on fish, the rugged carbon fiber drag outputs 20lbs of fish-stopping drag. Complete with a patented Speed Dial line indicator, the Lew’s Hyper Mag Speed Spool SLP Casting Reels combine cloud-like construction with next-level technology for the ultimate in lightweight performance.

GreatThese are some great reels. I have 6 of them. One did have an issue with a hole which was not threaded on the plate which holds the brake shoes in place. Lew's sent me a new spindle. But, other than that, these reels are awesome. Very light, easy to setup, casts great, and the retrieve is buttery smooth.

Comments: I have purchased two of these reels. This has been my go to reel for finesse fishing once they are dialed in there is no looking back. They are very light and extremely high quality. Great value for the money and Lew's customer service is second to none.

Comments: Just bought the HyperMag bait caster after using Diawa and Shimano high end bc's for years. This is a wonderful reel! So smooth with different weight lures from soft swimbait to Whopper Ploppers. Glad I bought it but not sure I like the round handles yet. More time on the water before I replace them with paddle style handles.

Comments: Love this reel, bought a couple of Lews reels on Black Friday and this one it's just amazing. Feels great in hand and casts really good.

From: Camilo A: Duluth, GA 12/28/20

Comments: Super smoooooth reel. I have this on my pitching and punching setup and it hasn't let me down over the past year. Enough drag to get the big ones out of the slop and light enough that I don't get fatigued after a full day of fishing.

From: SOCObassin: Santa Rosa, CA 12/1/20

Comments: Warning!First time you cast with this reel you will giggle like a school girl. It's just so smooth and effortless. I'm mad at myself for spending $400 per reel on Metaniums thinking thats what I had to spend to get a reel this good.No more. You will laugh at how far you can throw a weightless senko on this thing.Great job by Lews and the finish is all time sexy. All I wish for is that they make a slower gear ratio in this model like a 6.8 speed or similar.

From: Hydrilla Gorilla: Lake Seminole, GA 11/11/20

Comments:My favorite reel from lews. Light, strong drag system, no problem and this thing is abuse. Dock skipping, Jig, flipping. Pair this on a lews custom speed stick 7'0" MH rod and you'll be amaze at how light this set up is. Anyone who picks up this set up and surprise at how light this rod and reel set up is.

From: Phong: 6/30/20

Comments:Believe the hype. This Hyper Mag is the real deal. I do a lot heavy cover fishing down here in Texas. I've put through it's pace. I've had both the 7-8 gear ratios. I've caught some solid 8-10 pound bass with this reel in Falcon Lake and in Mexico. Time will tell but I believe this my workhorse now. I put my reels, rods, and line to the test. I set the hook hard and reel in fast to get the fish out and in the boat. With my heavy action rods and 65 - 80 pound braid ik no bass will break me off.

Comments:I'm very new to baitcasters. This is one of the first I bought along with a quantum, and another lews reel. Out of all three this is the only one I have not had any backlashes with. Extremely smooth feel, and casts great. I absolutely love how light this reel is. I have it paired with a St Croix legend tournament bass rod, and I can sling jigs for hours on this setup without feeling it in my wrists. Overall I am very happy I pulled the trigger on this reel for one of my first baitcasters. I just ordered up a second one to add to my arsenal to go on a topwater setup. It is a pricey reel, but worth every penny in my opinion.

From:Don: Grand Rapids, MI 4/16/20

Comments:This reel is amazing. Crazy lite. If your reel weighs over 7 ounces you don't know what your missing. It's hard to explain the difference 2 ounces can make. I got the 8.3:1 ratio for pitching and flipping. The speed is great. Reel is super smooth and handles ripping fish out off the tules with ease. I own a lot of Lews reels and love the flat paddle grips so I was apprehensive about the large knobs on this reel but got used to them fairly quick. The only thing I don't like is the side plate removal tab. I feel that over time it could be fragile. I prefer the old pull pin of the LFS models. Side plate removal is awkward and difficult. Definitely not something I want to do out on the water. Overall very happy with the reel. Super smooth.

Comments:Pros: Light weight, slick casting, plenty of drag. Holds ample amount of line. The finish is very nice and detailed.Cons: The round knobs I do not like. The main drive line makes a little noise now hope it doesn't get worse.Ordered new flat knobs from Lews website. $43.00 per pair and $10 shipping. Ouch! Too much for knobs and way too much for shipping. Conclusion: Time will tell. At $300 plus $53 for knobs. Maybe I should have bought another shimano metanium mgl. I know they hold up against Texas flipping. Will find out soon.

Comments:I got this reel for Christmas, and have used it for about 3 weeks. Starting out, I agree it is mainly for heavier lures (1/2 oz and up) and it does tend to overrun. I mainly got it for lighter lures, but otherwise it was awesome. Smooth, long casting, and powerful until...I would have about 30 fine casts then the line would knot up, the spool would stop, and the force would snap my line and make the lure go flying. Great service at lews said they could look at it, and said I was doing everything right like the brakes were right and I was backing my braid with mono. All lews I have owned have been awesome, just not this. Maybe yours will be different. I just returned it and bought a curado dc.

Comments:AWESOME reel .. have had for about a year now . It's in my top 3 .. my opinion it's as every bit equal to my shimano mentanium.. it's really everything in an upper end reel you could ask for .. soooooo silky smooth . Great drag . Super light .. pair it with a light rod and fish all day non stop . Lews & shimano - you guys make it so hard to pick an all time fav . Ha
Anyways - HIGHLY recommend this reel . You won't be disappointed.

Comments:Amazing reel BUT if you fish brackish or salt DO NOT BUY THIS REEL and go for an Aluminum or inshore model. I noticed some pitting on the inside of the reel casing around the Spool after a few trips out fishing Newport bay (salt water). I emailed Lew's to let them know just in case, so i had something in writing that it was happening. About 1 week later the reel looked like it was corroding from the inside out with holes now forming in the decaying magnesium. I emailed lew's again and Ross from customer service told me that it was from using the Magnesium reel in brackish or salt water environments. He asked me to send it in and he'd trade it for an Aluminum model at the same price range. (Btw, i have a Shimano Metanium which is also magnesium and it still looks and feels new after 5 months so i guess different composites?)
So, excellent reel for pure Freshwater. Super light and powerful with an amazing drag, i loved it for the 3 weeks i had it, I just wish it didn't dissolve. Lew's has THE BEST customer service in the industry. I'll continue to buy from them because i know they back up all their products, no matter what.

Comments:After owning high end shimano's and Daiwa steez I decided to buy this hyper mag and the custom pro speed. Now that I have owned them for about a month and several fishing trips I have decided these are my new favorite reels. They are super lightweight, powerful, and very slick looking. The line indicator, carbon handle, winn grips, etc are excellent features! I have found the braking system on these reels to be much easier to adjust than shimano's. Diawa's are easy to adjust as well but they seem to brake harder than these reels. I like my reels pretty loose so that is why I prefer the Lew's. You can absolutely launch lures! Other comments stated it doesn't like light lures but I have found that to be not be the case. I have been throwing 1/4oz squarebills like nothing. I will be buying several more!

From: Blake:Illinois 3/31/18

Comments: Hands down, the Hyper Mag Speed Spool SLP is the most impressive reel that I own (and I now own 5 of these). I own and have tried several Lews reels across their range of performance and price. Within the Lews lineup this reel resides at the top, and for good reason. The reel is light and smooth, with easy to use controls; it's comfortable and offers an impressive braking and drag system that is easy to use, and I feel is better than any out there. I've tried 13 fishing, and the $500 top of line Daiwa, and while impressive in their own right, they do not outperform this reel. Lews up'd their game and delivered a winning combination. Yes it's in the mid-high range of costs for reels, but for the money I haven't found a better performing, more comfortable, and capable reel.

Comments:I too just bought this reel. Took it out the other day and breaks were a little loud. It was raining so that might have had something to do with it. Called Lews and lady says if I'm not happy in the least little bit they would fix it. Its not doing it now might have been the cold wet weather. On the other hand the review below says it doesn't handle light lures well. That review had me worried as was gonna use this reel on my jerkbait setup. I tied on a 1/4 yo-zuri jerkbait and I have 50 lb maxcuatro on this thing and it bombed it with no back lash problems. I cant wait to see what it does when I get the correct line on it for jerkbaits. I will have a video on youtube showing it casting this light lure.

Comments:I have purchased this reel during the BF sales here at TW. I have been fishing the reel for a total of 4 trips and I feel that I have a good enough picture on the reel's performance to give a honest feedback. For context: I do own several Daiwa (SV103, Coastal TWS) and Shimano (Metanium MGL, Antares DC, Conquest 101HG, Aldebaran BFS) and can give a comparison to those reels.

Pros:
+ Super light and pretty
+ Fairly sturdy. Good frame design. Even under high pressure the frame does only show VERY little bending
+ Smooth retrieve (not as smooth as a Conquest, but smooth). I am interested to see how the longterm picture is here (Conquest again is the standard here for me)
+ Features: The hook keeper and the line indicator are handy (gimmick though)
+ external breaking system (I am generally a fan of reels where I can make all adjustments without having to open up the reel (reduced the risk of getting dust/dirt in)

Cons:
- Spool is made for heavier lures - 1/2 oz and up.F or me the reel can not hold a candle for lighter lures (everything under 1/2oz) in comparison to a SV103 or the Metanium. The reel has a very high tendencies to either overrun (when breaks are set properly) or just have minimum casting distance. Which in my opinion narrows the reels range to 1/2-2oz lures.
- Issue that comes along with the Magnesium frame is scratch resistancy. This is obvious but I am always surprised on how easy it is to scratch the reel (even if one takes very good care of the reel). I had the same issue with the Metanium MGL...
- Line capacity: Again, something that is obvious and can be worked around with (smaller diameter line or work with a braid + leader combo)

Conclusion:
IF you get a sale on the reel (Around 250USD) it is good reel where it def shines in the lure range of 1/2-2oz. It could be a great punching, flipping, frogging, heavier Jig reel. If you throw heavier lures, it is def. an option. If you are looking for a well balanced all-around reel, I would look at different options!

From:Seb - CA 12/23/17

Comments:Recently picked this reel up and it's quickly becoming my favorite. Super lite Cast amazing and has plenty of drag. With that said the Winn knob are horrible. Why lews insist on using these is beyond me. They are simply to fat and take away from this reel. I changed them out the next day and that brought out just how smooth this reel is to wind in.

From: Jason: Sanford 11/5/17

Comments:Reel is unbelievable..... I've used it multiple times now and it out preforms everything I own. I pared it with a g-Loomis 7R1221 rod and it'll cast farther than any of my friends reels. Outstanding job by lews!

From: Eric 10/11/17

Comments:The Shimano and Daiwa flagship reel killer. I have a Daiwa Steez SV-TW and both a Shimano Aldebaran 50 and Metanium MGL. I purchased the Lews Hypermag in a left hand retrieve in the 8:3:1 ratio. Spooled it up with 50lb PP braid and my favorite rod on earth for frogs, a Daiwa Steez XBD. When I tell you that there isn't a reel out that can hold a candle to this thing for its price point, I'm not joking one bit. I have been slaying bass on the frog and this reel is partly why I have been succeeding. The area I fish is VERY heavy with vegetation, and the bass like to dive into said vegetation very quickly after slurping down the frog. The drag on this reel is insanely smooth and powerful for getting those fish out of the thickest weeds imaginable. My Metanium MGL will be demoted from its frogging' days and now be used a line picker-upper for bottom presentations(causes that's what reels really are for lol) and the Steez will just be looked at with a slight wince of regret cause I bought it instead of another one of these. I use the Steez SV for skipping senkos and its phenomenal for that, but oh man, does this new Hypermag seal the deal for what Ill be buying when I need a new reel. Light, POWERFUL, smooth, and aesthetically pleasing, what more do you ask of a $299.00 reel? Nothing cause this thing is all you need son....
