Overview

50-percent soft plastic swimbait, 50-percent popper, the Z Man Pop Shadz offer a unique, hybrid design that is 100-percent effective. Unlike anything on the market, the Z Man Pop Shadz are poured using the super-durable, super-buoyant ElaZtech plastic, which allows it to be fished along the surface like a popper, even with a heavy gauge hook.

However unlike regular hard-bodied poppers, the Z Man Pop Shadz feature hook pockets along the back and the bottom that make it incredibly weedless and eliminate hook tangles. For added attraction, the cupped mouth generates a strong water spray and a hard-slapping acoustic that bass won’t be able to ignore. Available in a number of tournament-winning colors, the Z Man Pop Shadz are truly original, blending two different bait categories into one very impressive package.

*Do not mix ElaZtech baits with standard soft plastics.

Comments: Is ok. Do not use long shank or offset worm hooks. Was fishing for smallies and wanted to use smaller hooks to increase hook up ratio. it changes the action completely and couldn't even get them to spit anymore. Works great on wide gaps though.

Comments: Killer topwater for inshore trout and reds......durable for a soft plastic bait. Pro tip: after rigging, pull the head of the bait back just a bit and touch the hook shank with a small dab of super glue......let the bait slide back up. Holds the bait in place when vigorously popping and, upon a strike, makes the body of the bait move away from the hook point rather than the head being pulled down the shank. Better hookups.

Comments: These are amazing for fishing topwater in thick surface weeds! Because they float you can keep them in the strikezone for a long time. Extremely weedless and rarely had to clear weeds off. Probably caught 30+ bass on a single bait and it's still going strong. The trick to keeping the hook from sliding through the bait is to take a bit of the plastic at the point of the hook and pull it up and over the point. That keep the hook pressed against the bait. Seriously, these things are a game changer!

From: Unknown: 8/17/21

Comments: Very durable, obviously, but I will have to agree that the hookup ratio is not the best. With that being said, you will continue to get bit when they are not hitting any other topwater! It is an amazing little finesse bait around grass and the fish come unglued for it. I will be buying more and will always have one tied on.

Comments: Tried the watermelon/chartreuse 4" on 3/0 Mustad KVD grip pins. I weighed these without the hook, and it is 10.83 grams. Fished with one bait for 2 days, and caught 12 fish. All large mouth. Most around 1lb to 1-1/2lb. A couple near 2lb, maybe a bit over. All hitting aggressively. The bait held up well. The lip did tear, but more than enough meat still there to rethread the hook, and continue to use it. It's still tied on my line, and I will start the day with it next outing. These don't float as well as I had hoped. Spent most of the retrieve submerged just below the surface. I do use a floating braid. Still very productive.

From: Michael: Leander, TX 5/20/21

Comments: I have used these many times and love every second of using them but the only downside is that with the Teflon coated hooks don't like to keep the bait in place but over all 10/10 good job z man

From: Brad: 4/23/20

Comments: One of the best top water baits available. The versatility is pretty unmatched by any other top-water besides maybe Z-mans Hard Leg Frogz( Witch is also one of the best top water baits). The Elaztech Makes the bait float better than any other top water bait from other companies, and it doesn't tear! I personally rig a treble hook to the bait and have had much success. But the weedless feature allows me to go where many top waters cant with a standard ewg hook in the place of the treble hook. .

Comments: If you like to skip docks then this bait is for you.  You can pop it, give it a slight twitch for a 180 degree, or a real slow retrieve and it will give a slight side to side action.  I would rig it on a Gamakatsu Skip Gap Hook, or Mustad Grip Pin EWG to keep the head from siding down the shank.  Also might use a rubber band piece or bait button to keep the body from sliding down the bend.

Comments: Used a pack of these this this summer on high pressure dock filled area of Minnetonka. Skipped them weightless under docks on a Med-Heavy spinning rod. I alone caught 13.5lbs, with three over three, the biggest being 4lb 9oz largemouth. After that I bought a pack of 4' in white. Can use these around grass, pads, docks, anything and you'll catch fish. I even caught a 9lb striper at Lanier while practicing for a tourney. Get ya some

Comments:
Got a pack of the watermelon chartreuse 4" pop shadz from a lucky tackle box and am quite impressed with this lure. I will not claim that I have caught a huge trophy fish on it or that I have even caught a ton of fish on it, but I will say there is not many other baits on the market that I can throw into the weeds like I can with this lure. I rig this bait up on a 3/0 trokar round bend worm hook on a lews carbon blue medium heavy speed stick with a bass pro formula baitcast reel 7.1:1 ratio using 30 pound Berkley fireline braid. First time throwing this lure was an open water situation and I got nothing on it not even a swirl in the area of the lure. I decided to give the lure one more try before retiring it from my tackle box, throwing it around an extremely sloppy grass area I quickly realized where this bait excels as no matter how thick and nasty the grass was i could work the bait through without even picking up a single strand of grass, within about 10 minutes of the "final tr
y I caught a small small mouth bass just outside the grass I pulled the bait through. I continued in this spot to get multipul blow ups on the surface but failed to get the solid hook set within all the thick grass. Last week similar situation while I had about 6-7 solid strikes I was unable to get a proper hook set in the grass, but as the day went on I finally had a huge blow up just outside the weeds on the surface, and the fight was on to my surprise it was a 2.75-3 pound chain pickrel that struck this lure as such I expected the plastic to be destroyed , but to my surprise there was not 1 bit of visible damage on this lure even after being chomped on by a sharp toothed fish. This bait even impressed my friend when I stretched it from 4" to about 18" without tearing the plastic.P

ROS
Rigged right it is completely seedless.
Casts a good distance for such a small weightless plastic
Super durable thanks to the "elaztech" plastic construction
Has caught more than one species of fish
Makes a surprising amount of comotion given it's size and design
Won't flood like a hollow body frog will

CONS "elaztech" cannot come into contact with other plastics or else it will shrivel
due to lack of weight does not cast really far away
Sometimes difficult to get a proper cadence
Not a great hook up ratio but this may also be my fault
Only 3 in a pack
Overrall I will be buying more of these most likely in the 5" variant, to be honest this lure may even replace the hollow body frogs in my tackle box

Comments: 4 inch Chartreus, 1st cast 2nd pop, 1.5lber LMB, 2nd cast next to Lilly pads 4 or 5 pops, 2.9lber LMB, few cast not results, around the 8 or 9th cast 6ft deep open water over large sunken tree, 3.7lber that fought better than some larger ones I've landed. 10 minutes later, cast into heavy grass and seed and popped it aggressively and around the 5 or 6th pop a 2.4lber. These were all caught on the same popper in a time period of about 25 minutes. I am still using the same popper a week later and have had remarkable results in varying conditions. It appears to me if there is a bass with in 5 or 6 feet of this little popper, its triggering it to bite. I lost only one fish to date and this was due to my tangling into tree limb above me when I set it. These are an awesome bait and I cant wait to try the 5 inch version.

From: Unknown 8/25/17

Comments: I received this in chartreuse from my Lucky Tackle Box subscription and gave it a try, pairing it with a 3/0 Trapper hook. On my first cast around the edge of Lily pads I hooked up, and landed, a 2 pound bass. That was enough to add it into the arsenal full time

From: Dpuck - 7/14/17

Comments: If your a guy like scooter, you can tie on a treble hook for the popper you just have to find a video on youtube to find out how to do it, or you have to wait longer to set the hook or else you won't get the hook in the mouth.

From: Unknown 4/2/17

Comments: Love this bait for the most part. I've had a lot of misses, can't seem to get a good hook set using a 5/0 hook. I caught a 9lb 12oz largemouth today on a chartreuse color. Just wish I could find a hook that would work better.

From: Scooter: Camden, Ar 3/21/17

Comments: If you're on a hot frog bite but are missing hook sets due to short bites, give these a try.  The smaller profile allows fish to suck it down their gullet easier and you can give them an extra second or two before setting the hook.  I probably had close to about 95% hook to land ratio.  I was using 4/0 and 5/0 ewg style hooks with bait holder barbs tied to straight 50lbs Sunline FX2 braid.  Great baits!

From: MaZmus: San Diego 12/25/16

Comments: Honestly, this isn't the best all-around topwater on the market, I concede that. I will tell you that there are many applications where this will exceed your expectations. If you are the angler who thinks that all tpwaters are equal, stop reading this now. Otherwise, I'd suggest getting a few of these and seeing how realistic the action can be. Absolutely DESTROYED my fishing buddy on a clear Canadian lake fishing for smallies. He threw every other topwater he owned and would not take one of these from me. Too bad, as I lost count of my catch!

From: Fishtail: CT 12/28/16

Comments: This is a great bait to have if your fishing weedy banks or patches. Floats like a cork, even with a 5/0 hook in it. Pops nice. Fished slow & looks real. Only used it about 3 times, got bass every time. Nothing big yet but the potential is there. Getting another color now.

From: Jim: Florida, 11/2/16

Comments: HUGE fan. I fished this all last year in the clear waters of a northern CT lake. I rigged the pop shadz with a single large flippin hook. I would thread through the mouth, then again shortly after, thus keeping the hook in place. Never lost a fish. Can't wait to try out the 4" version.

From: Matthew: Doylestown, PA 4/5/16

Comments: fished it over heavy primrose on the big "G' will come through anything. great action

From: Tom: Scottsboro, AL 5/24/15

Comments: this soft plastic popper is great for weeded places (like the edges of my lake). This is a absolute game changer for me, and will probably be for you.

From: Richard: NY 11/24/14

Comments: This bait is awesome. Not sure what the guy below is talking about, but the face has a nice cup to it and spits water and pops really well. It worked great for me rigged weedless with a 5/0 hook or with a big single treble. This thing floats like a cork, and if it dives a little, just pause and let it float back up to the top. Completely different action than a hard popper, and the fact you can rig it weedless is a game changer. I see lots of applications for this bait.

From: Shane: Santee, SC 9/25/14

Comments: I just got back from fishing the Louisiana delta for reds and had the opportunity to use these there. Scott's previous review is spot on. You have to check the bait every cast to make sure the hook is in the correct position. The few seconds it takes is well worth it with all the grass lined edges. I could have thrown a spook or other treble hooked bait but would of risked tangling in cover. I caught two nice slot reds on this pop shadz. You must wait until they take it before setting the hook. This bait will always be rigged on a topwater rod when I'm fishing reds. I think it will work especially well in the mosquito lagoon over the grass beds.

From: Jill: Phoenix, AZ 8/31/14

Comments: JUNK! Be better off to buy a pack of jumbo Marsh mellows I think they would have better action. The front of the lure is flat with no cup or cone shape that will allow a popping action or spitting action and does not walk side to side just up and down like a bobber.

From: Josh: Rincon, GA 8/30/14

Comments: I was able to get my hands on some before our trip to Mexico last week. Fished one with 20 pound mono and 20 pound braid, using a 5/0 EWG hook. Unfortunately, the usual topwater bite was virtually nonexistent. I was really expecting these to excel thrown up into the flooded shallow vegetation. Fished them the first morning and caught one/lost one. Barely fished topwater after that. They are a little finicky for hook placement and will flip over if the hook slips through the bait out of position, which seemed to happen easily. Sometimes the bait wanted to submarine and go underwater, losing part of the useful portion of the cast. At times they can have a great popping, slashing action. Overall, I think they will be a nice bait, especially to throw in and around cover. My experience was just too short to give a thorough evaluation. Durable and reasonable, worth having a package or two for sure.
